T-VIPS TVG410 powers Turin Winter Olympic coverage

The first deployment of T-VIPS' TVG410 uncompressed SDI to IP Video Gateway came through what Tom Erik Krognes, Technical Director of Scandinavian operator Media Netwerk, referred to as a "baptism of fire" earlier this year when it played an integral part in allowing Norwegian sports channel, SportsN, to broadcast round-the-clock coverage of the Turin Winter Olympics for sixteen consecutive days.

Speaking after the closing ceremony Krognes praised the TVG410's performance saying: "The transmission demands have been high during the past months but we have experienced no problems whatsoever. Everyone involved is delighted with the T-VIPS solution."

Terje Hammer, Media Netwerk's CEO, was also quick to play tribute to the TVG410 saying: "The new T-VIPS Connect solution means that IP video transport can now combine the QoS service levels required by broadcasters with the cost-effectiveness of IP. Using the TVG 410, picture quality is optimised by keeping it un-compressed until as late as possible in the transport chain and encoding delays are eliminated in the contribution chain. Both these factors provide quality and economic benefits for our contribution and distribution customers."

Johnny Dolvik, T-VIPS' CEO, expressed his delight at the TVG410's flawless performance at one of the world's most high-profile and technically demanding events, saying: "The time is now right for the transport of professional broadcast quality video over IP networks. The QoS levels are now high enough to satisfy the most demanding broadcaster thanks to Forward Error Correction (FEC) and error concealment in our Video Gateways. T-VIPS look forward to partnering with broadcasters, IP network operators and telcos offering video services to enable them to benefit from our expertise in this field."

Part of the Viasat TV offering, SportN is produced in cooperation with NRK the Norwegian Public Broadcaster. Media Netwerk, which runs a contribution and distribution network as well as handling production for NRK, is responsible for handling content from the NRK production centre to the Viasat uplink. The main transmitter/receiver pair of TVG410 Gateways is used for the forward path from NRK to Media Netwerk where the content is encoded before re-transmission to the uplink provider, Viasat, in Sweden.
